The North Saskatchewan River flows east through the Kootenay Plains.  In the distance is the glaciated east aspect of Mt. Wilson.

The Kootenay Plains are named after the Ktunaxa First Nations who lived in the valley until 1810.  The area is located on a historical trade corridor used by First Nations as well as fur traders traveling through the Canadian Rockies
